Rescue

  1. Report of Child Abuse/Neglect: The process usually begins with a report of child abuse or neglect, either from a concerned individual, a mandatory reporter such as a teacher or doctor, or from the child her/himself.
  2. Investigation: Once a report is received, CPI  launches an investigation. This may involve interviewing the child, the parents or guardians, and others in the child’s life (teachers, relatives, friends etc.). The CPI staff may also visit child’s home to assess the living conditions.
  3. Assessment: The Child Protection Officer (CPO) uses the gathered information to assess the child’s safety. If the child is in immediate danger, s/he may be removed from the home / street/workplace right away.
  4. Court’s Involvement: In most cases, a judge must approve any long-term changes to a child’s living situation. This might involve a series of hearings and possibly a trial. Throughout this process, the focus is on the best interest of the child.
  5. Temporary Care and Accommodation: If a child has been removed from her/his home, s/he may be placed in a safe residential care facility, depending on the circumstances. In line with the needs, the child may also receive required services including counselling or medical care.
